Your work is superb, this one especially. I hope you will pardon my ignorance when I ask if these are produced from a blank canvas or if they begin life photographically. Apologies in advance if I offend :-\
Elaine van Dyk, about 1 year ago
Jack57, thank you for you comment. No offence taken at all. “Sighing of The Dawn”, “The Dance of the Crowned Cranes” and all of “The Lost City” series are combinations of different photographs I’ve taken, and then layered and manipulated in Photoshop to give them less of a photographic feel. The “Arum lily” series started life as my drawings which I photographed and played with in Photoshop. These are my first serious attempts at digital art. My background study is in printmaking (etching, monoprints, lino cuttings, wood blocks, etc.) and I just love drawing. But all said and done, while I am enjoying this new challenge, I still prefer the smell of paint and the feel of paint brushes, pastels/charcoal and pencils in my hand, and I prefer to feel the paper and canvas beneath my fingers.

The lighting and the distance of the elephants compliments the story really well!

Hi Whirligig, this is stunning!
There’s nothing like the feel and smell of paint… and turps but it’s fun experimenting with ps.
Can’t wait to see more of your work!

Thank you all for your terrific encouragement. It’s really rewarding to see that people are feeling the atmosphere I tried so hard to instill in this image. It took a long time, and many retries!

Beautiful and very moving – elephants have a special knack of making me cry, they are such magnificant, grand yet vulnerable creatures.
Elaine van Dyk, about 1 year ago
It’s so nice to know there are other people who are as emotional about elephants as I am. Thank you for taking the time to look at my work.

Very atomospheric Elaine. (in both senses of the word). I think we can learn a lot from digital manipulations in Photoshop and painting in programs like Corel Painter… learning which we can then apply to our ‘real media’ creations or just appreciate for itself.
Elaine van Dyk in reply to EnPassant’s comment, 3 months ago
Thanks for your input, EnPassant. I agree that there is much to learn from modern creative tools, as they all help to expand our creative “vocabulary”. Finding new ways of expressing oneself is always exciting.
