  • Lights in the Dark by William Carne

Camera : Sony A-100 / Date and time taken : 12 April 2008. Various times / Focal length : various / F-Number : various / ISO : 100 / Exposure Time : various / Location: Calgary, AB, Canada / Post: The stars are painted in photoshop from scratch. The tree and model are two different pictures that were desaturated and 100% darkened to create the silhouette effect. This idea was inspired from a shot in the movie “The Fountain” where Hugh Jackman is practicing Thai Chi in silhouette in front of stars. I’m doing a series of nudes in mysterious/almost supernatural landscapes and thought this would be a good way to start it. Make sure you click on the picture to view it at max. resolution. Since it is black on black it doesn’t look like much in the smaller images. The first image of my “Dreams” series.

  • Vine Lines by Jared Revell

This shot is down the side veranda at Boyntons winery in Porepunkah (10 km from Bright). / I tried to capture within the frame the lines from the path and symmetry the vines on the posts made. The stunning red leaves finished/made the shot I think. / Setting the aperture to f/4 gave the shot a softer effect and I think makes the viewer appreciate the lines. Canon EOS 20D w/ EF 24-105mm / Aperture: f/4.0 / Exposure: 1/180 / ISO: 200 / Shutter Priority / Mods: Addition of some fill light as it was a touch too dark. Location on Google Maps

  • sharing secrets (abstract) by Lenny La Rue, IPA

This is a shot that just wasn’t happening once it got to the computer. I looked at it a long time and got only one impression: these two butterflies were talking to each other and I was a eavesdropper on their conversation. At the time, I didn’t bother them, since they looked to be a couple, but I wanted a “family portrait” so I snapped off about 10 shots quickly and moved on. I used the Olympus IR-500 for the macro but I wasn’t really trying to get too close, hence the “mid-range” feel that’s not quite macro but not really ‘just a regular shot’ either. The selective colouring tool in Adobe’s PhotoShop Element’s 3 saved this photograph from the Archives Of Hell: the external hard drive where more than 100,000 images dwell/languish, either never to be seen again or hunted down by approximate date if I need something in particular. I turned the entire image black and white then tried to add the colour to just the butterflies. That didn’t work well since I wasn’t interested in making all the careful edits to select only the subjects. Instead, I blew out the entire shot: maxed the saturation settings for selective hues until the wings looked interesting while ignoring the rest of the image (which was also looking rather maxed out. LOL! Then I used Corel’s PaintShop Pro IX to enlarge the image as big as I could get it on the screen (to see the edges better), select the paintbrush tool, and to wipe the entire shot, sans the butterflies, of all colour, leaving the surrounding areas all black and white. It’s a lot easier for me to remove surrounding elements of a photograph than to try to isolate a single element. For Red Bubble, I went back to Elements to resize the image (since that program resizes much more carefully than Corel’s) and make it large enough to be of use here for making everything from postcards to posters without the distortion of expanding pixels or the randomness of making the computer “guess” what new pixels to create to fill out the new gaps in data. I hope this teaches anyone who’s wondering but if any of you in Photography 101 would like more detailed information of what I use or how I use it, by all means email, BubbleMail, or catch me on an Instant Messenger using rarexistence657 on AOL, MSN, or Yahoo and I’ll be glad to go into more details or walk you thru an edit if you’d like. Snap on!

  • Five Hundred Boylston Street by James Hughes

This image is a combination of 4 photos pieced together in Photoshop CS3. I took the original captures as RAW files, and imported them into Lightroom. Once i was happy with the exposure levels i slowly and painfully tied them together concentrating on perspective. I then added a mustard/green tint to the final merged image and named it.
