I think the symbols are vowel sounds, like ‘A, B, C’...wish it were more meaningful!

this is gorgeous! i can’t remember what the first character is, but i know that the second two are ‘ma’ and ‘su’, pronoounced mas when together. where do you get your inspiration from and do you refer to any pictures when you actually draw the figures?
Karin Taylor in reply to Teagan Watts’s comment, 6 months ago
Hi Teagan, great questions and thank you for asking :D
I do lots of research when I’m interested in a particular subject, this was one of the first orientals I attempted, so her outfit is a mix of the art nouveau fringe, baby doll dress and the orient, a wierd mix I know…I love fashion also, and like to imagine and draw up designs on outfits. I never was a sewer, I prefer to ‘draw’ the stitching on my clothes, it’s very satisfying. Rather than draw from pictures, I dwell on them and put them away until many of the images I’ve seen begin to distil and mix together in my mind, and then I am ready to put them all together….something interesting is then formed from the eclectic mix of mind images….and it could be anything I’ve seen at all, out of a magazine, etc. I scour 2nd hand bookshops for materials, reading and found to use as well, and my library is well stocked…..if I can’t find books I turn to the internet to research. I love research every bit as much as painting…..sometimes I can’t stop and it becomes a deterrent to getting any art done! lol
Thank you very much for asking, and I hope I’ve been able to answer your questions Teagan, Cheers, Karin :D (when I’m drawing I put the pictures away usually, unless I need technical assistance, say with the wheels on a pram or the angle of a steering wheel, etc) as I find it a hindrance to draw from a picture nearby…I find I do my best work if have free reign on the creativity and let the inspiration flow … k

I slipped up as far as the lettering on her dress and cannot quite recall where I got them from, my memory is failing me…..but I thought they were ‘a,b,c’ letters…..so sorry I can’t remember :( but you are probably right, especially since you have quite a bit more experience than I do with actually living in Japan :D
